Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old Iowan, speaks in the Iowa House of Representatives in opposition to a resolution which would ban same-sex marriage.
He tells about the un-exceptional experience of being raised by two mothers. Un-exceptional because his family isn’t much different than any other midwestern family; the sexual orientation of his parents has had no effect on his ability to be a normal, decent human being. And, in my eyes, an exemplary American.
Never underestimate the power of plain-spoken honesty.
As an aside, I relish the part where he says “We’re Iowans, we don’t expect anyone to solve our problems for us. We fight our own battles.” Midwestern people are America’s stoics.
(Unfortunately, the proposed resolution passed.)
